SightCare Member Launches Innovative New Optical Device
SightCare was proud to announce the launch of the innovative Optimec Visual Fixation System at its annual conference for independent practices at the Telford International Centre on Monday 17th September 2018.
The Visual Fixation System (VFS) has been developed by SightCare member Simon Berry from Simon Berry Optometrists in Durham. Simon is an Optometrist with over 20 years’ experience working in both the hospital paediatric clinic and in his own independent practice in Durham.
The VFS System has been developed by Simon to help ECPs conduct their clinical measurements for children and adults with a learning disability. The device being launched at the SightCare conference is to help clinicians perform dynamic retinoscopy and measure accommodation.
Simon says “I see a lot of children and adults with a learning disability. For these patients it is sometimes a challenge to keep them interested and attract their attention whilst trying to complete the various clinical measurements needed. There are also techniques more relevant to this group of patients, such as dynamic retinoscopy for children with down syndrome, that means it is essential for the clinician to know they have the attention of the patient.”
The initial prototype was made with help from Durham University and the technology was licensed to Optimec, a UK based manufacturing company. Optimechad a stand at the 2018 SightCare conference and Simon demonstrated the use of the device to attending ECPs.
SightCare CEO John French said, “We are delighted to be able to support Simon with the launch of his exciting new product which has the potential to help so many children with Down Syndrome to see properly. Simon has combined his entrepreneurial skills, that have enabled him to run a successful independent optical practice, with his experience of paediatric eyecare to bring to life his vision of making this unique product available to all ECPs caring for children with learning disabilities.”
