Optical practices encouraged to participate in World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week 2026
The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) is calling on optical practices across the UK to support World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week, taking place 10th–16th May 2026. This annual campaign raises vital awareness of retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer that mainly affects children under six and highlights the critical importance of early detection and swift referral.
We were delighted to share an awareness video and donation link during SightCare LIVE – as well as providing every delegate with awareness leaflets and posters as part of the efforts to raise awareness across the UK.
Why optometrists are essential in early diagnosis
Optometrists are often among the first professionals able to spot early signs of retinoblastoma. Routine eye exams can reveal symptoms such as a white pupil (leukocoria) or a squint, both of which may otherwise go unnoticed by parents. By promoting awareness and sharing information, optical practices can help ensure more children receive timely diagnosis and treatment, ultimately protecting eyes, sight, and lives.
How Optical Practices Can Get Involved
1. Access Our Resource Kit for Optical Practices
CHECT has created a dedicated World Retinoblastoma Awareness Week Resource Kit, containing:
- Prewritten social media content
- Images and graphics
- Awareness messaging guidance
- Printable posters and educational materials
These resources help make participation simple, accessible, and impactful.
CHECT will also share posts across social media throughout the awareness week. Practices can help amplify this important message by liking, sharing, and posting content using the hashtag #RbWeek.
2. Display and Distribute Educational Materials
Request free signs and symptoms leaflets and posters from CHECT and display them in practice windows, waiting areas, and consultation rooms. These materials help parents recognise early warning signs they may otherwise overlook.
3. Run a Crazy Glasses Day
Invite staff, patients, and your local community to take part in a Crazy Glasses Day, wearing fun and wacky spectacles to spark conversations and raise awareness. Free downloadable glasses templates are available.
4. Take on a Challenge Event
Why not challenge yourself or your team by joining one of CHECT’s organised events? Options include:
- The Great North Run
- The National 3 Peaks Challenge
- A tandem skydive
More details are available via the Challenge Events section on the CHECT website.
5. Fundraise Through What You Love
Whether it’s a coffee morning, bake sale, local collection, or fundraising with your sports or hobby club, every activity helps support children and families affected by retinoblastoma.
CHECT’s Fundraising Manager is available to provide support, ideas, and resources at fundraising@chect.org.uk or 020 7377 5578.
