How independent opticians can make the most of Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday is one of the best opportunities of the year to remind your community why independent practices matter. Taking place on Saturday 5 December 2026, it’s a nationwide celebration of local businesses, and with the festive season about to begin, it’s the perfect moment to bring new faces through your doors and thank the patients who already trust you.
As an independent optician, you offer something the high street chains can’t: personal care, local knowledge and relationships built over many years. Here’s how to put that front and centre, and how SightCare can help you do it.
We’ve created a Small Business Saturday video voiced by SightCare members, real independent opticians talking about what makes their practices special. It’s ready to share, so there’s no need to film or edit anything yourself.
We will be sharing it on SightCare Local on the 30 November – please help us to raise awareness by sharing our post. Alternatively, you can download it and post it on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, add it to your website, or play it on a screen in your practice. Hearing from fellow independents is a powerful way to show patients that they’re supporting a genuine community of local professionals.

We’ve also created a full set of Small Business Saturday marketing materials, free to download as part of your SightCare member benefits:
- Social media images for your feed and stories, so your profiles look polished and consistent
- Posters to print and display in your window and around your practice
Download them now from our member portal, schedule your posts and get your posters up early so patients and passers-by know you’re taking part.
Our materials are a great starting point. Here are some other ideas to build around them:
Offer something special. A free lens cleaning kit, a complimentary frame adjustment, or a small gift with every purchase gives people a reason to visit that day.
Tell your story. Share who you are, how long you’ve been in the community and what you love about your work. Introduce your team on social media. People shop independent because they want the personal touch, so show it.
Team up with neighbouring businesses. Partner with the café, bookshop or florist nearby. Cross-promote each other, or create a simple “shop local” trail that sends customers between your doors.
Make your window work harder. Refresh your display with seasonal frames, a clear Small Business Saturday message and a welcoming sign. Your window is often the first impression a new patient gets.
Welcome people in. Offer a refreshment and a friendly chat, or run a frame styling event. Even if someone isn’t ready to buy that day, a great experience brings them back.
Capture contact details. Invite visitors to join your mailing list or book their next eye test before they leave, so the day’s footfall turns into long-term loyalty.
Post before, during and after. Build anticipation in the weeks beforehand, share photos and stories on the day, and thank everyone who came afterwards. Tag your posts with #SmallBusinessSaturday and #ChooseLocal so you reach people searching for local businesses to support.
Thank your existing patients. Your loyal patients are your best advocates. A simple thank-you message, in store or online, and a nudge to tell friends and family can make a real difference.
