December puts more people on your high street than almost any other month. They’re shopping for gifts, meeting friends and family, and spending more time in town centres. A well-planned window can help your practice stand out, spark curiosity and turn a passing glance into a visit.
You don’t need a big budget or an elaborate installation. A clear theme, a few well-chosen details and some carefully selected frames are enough to create a display that catches attention and reflects your practice’s personality.
Here are seven ideas to inspire your December window display.
1. Add a touch of festive sparkle
Festive doesn’t have to mean tinsel in every corner. Choose a simple colour palette, such as gold and white, silver and navy, or classic red and green, and stick to it throughout the display.
Run fairy lights around the edges of the window, add a few metallic stars or snowflakes, and position your frames where they can catch the light. Keep decorations to the sides and back so the eyewear remains the main attraction.
Top tip: Use warm-white LEDs and hide cables wherever possible. Make sure lights and decorations are suitable for your display area and don’t obstruct visibility into the practice.
2. Make your frames the perfect gift
December is gift-giving season, making it the ideal opportunity to showcase eyewear as something special.
Style your window like a boutique gift display using elegant gift boxes, ribbon, tissue paper and decorative wrapping. Statement frames, colourful styles and premium collections can all work particularly well.
If you offer gift vouchers, add a tasteful sign to let passers-by know. Since eyewear is a personal choice, focus on inspiring ideas rather than presenting glasses as a one-size-fits-all gift.
Top tip: Empty gift boxes and recycled packaging can create a premium look without a premium price tag. Use one wrapping paper or ribbon colour to keep everything coordinated.
3. Create a winter wonderland
If you’d prefer a display that isn’t entirely Christmas-focused, a winter theme can work beautifully throughout December and beyond.
Use shades of white, pale blue and silver alongside paper snowflakes, frosted-effect vinyl and white display plinths. Creating different heights within the display can add interest and help individual frames stand out.
One of the biggest advantages of this theme is that it’s easy to adapt after Christmas. Remove any festive wording and your display can continue into January with very little effort.
Top tip: Cut paper snowflakes in a variety of sizes to create depth and movement. Leave plenty of space between decorations so the window doesn’t feel cluttered.
4. Team up with a local artist for a painted window display
A hand-painted window can stop people in their tracks and help your practice stand out from neighbouring shops.
Consider collaborating with a local artist, illustrator or art student to create a festive or winter-inspired design. Snowflakes, winter foliage, stars and seasonal scenes can all work well, particularly when combined with subtle eyewear elements or your practice colours.
A collaboration like this can also strengthen community connections. Credit the artist in your display and share photos of the finished artwork on social media, tagging them wherever possible.
Top tip: Plan ahead, as many artists become fully booked before Christmas. Agree the design, budget, timings and permissions to photograph and share the artwork before work begins. Make sure any paints or markers are suitable for glass and easy to remove.
5. Celebrate colour and personality
December’s darker days provide an opportunity to use colour to catch people’s attention.
Instead of focusing on festive decorations, let your frames do the talking. Build your display around a selection of frames in complementary or contrasting colours and use carefully chosen props to enhance the theme.
You could group frames by colour, shape or style to highlight the breadth of your range and encourage passers-by to take a closer look.
This approach feels seasonal without being overtly Christmas-themed and can help your practice look contemporary and distinctive.
Top tip: Limit yourself to two or three key colours and repeat them throughout the display. The frames should provide the variety while the colour palette creates a cohesive look.
6. Keep your message simple and inviting
A striking display catches attention, but a clear message gives people a reason to step inside.
Consider using a short, easy-to-read line of text that supports your theme, such as:
- See the season in style.
- Find your winter look.
- A little sparkle for the festive season.
- New frames, fresh perspectives.
- Your local independent optician, here for you this winter.
If you’re promoting a specific service or offer, keep the wording simple, accurate and visible from the pavement. One strong message is usually more effective than several competing signs.
Top tip: Stand across the street and read your sign. If it’s difficult to absorb in a few seconds, increase the contrast, make the font larger or cut unnecessary words.
7. Give your display a second life after Christmas
December is a busy month, so it makes sense to design a display that can evolve rather than be completely rebuilt.
Start with a winter-themed foundation and add a few festive details. Once Christmas has passed, remove those elements and keep the rest. White plinths, silver accents and cool blue tones can move seamlessly from festive window to fresh January display.
You could also schedule a simple mid-month refresh by repositioning frames, updating signage or introducing a new accent colour.
Top tip: Take photographs of your finished display before dismantling it. You’ll have a useful record of what worked, content for social media and inspiration for next year’s festive window.
Before you start
A little planning can make a big difference. Before you begin decorating, consider these simple steps:
- Pick a theme and colour palette first. Decide on one main idea and two or three key colours before buying decorations.
- Work with what you already have. Reuse decorations, repurpose packaging and create simple paper features where possible.
- Plan for the whole month. Choose a display that can be refreshed during December and adapted for January.
- Check it from outside. View the display from a passer-by’s perspective during both daylight and darkness to make sure it’s tidy, well-lit and inviting.
Make the most of your December window
Your window is often the first impression people have of your practice, and it’s a valuable opportunity to show what makes your independent optician unique. Whether you opt for festive sparkle, a contemporary winter theme or a bold celebration of colour, a little planning can go a long way.
Most importantly, have fun with it. Your enthusiasm and creativity will shine through, and customers will notice.
