Where are you on your optical practice journey?
Every independent optical practice is different.
Some owners are just starting out and building their reputation. Others have established successful practices and are looking at how they can strengthen performance or explore new opportunities. And some are beginning to think about succession, stepping back or what will happen to the practice they have spent years building.
Wherever you are, having the right support around you can make a difference.
At SightCare, we understand that running an independent practice is not necessarily a linear journey with a fixed destination. Your priorities change as your practice, your team and your own ambitions evolve.
Our member journey reflects four broad stages: establish, evolve, expand and exit – helping members identify the support, resources and opportunities that may be most useful to them at different points.
So, where are you on your practice journey?
Establish: building strong foundations
The early years of running an independent practice can be exciting – but they can also be challenging. There are patients to attract and build relationships with, a team to recruit and develop, suppliers to manage and countless decisions to make.
At this stage, your focus might be on establishing your reputation, understanding the numbers and creating strong foundations for the future.
Questions you might be asking include:
- How do I attract and retain patients?
- How can I make my practice stand out locally?
- How do I recruit the right people and start building a strong team?
- Which areas of the business should I focus on first?
- How do I make sure I am financially and operationally on the right track?
For owners establishing their first practice, having experienced independents around you can be just as valuable as having the right practical resources.
SightCare’s community and peer-to-peer networking provide opportunities to learn from other independent practice owners who have already faced many of the same decisions. Alongside that shared experience, members can access practical support covering areas such as recruitment, training, NHS contracts, finance and price setting, suppliers and equipment, marketing and launching a new practice.
It means that while the decisions remain yours, you do not have to find every answer on your own.
Evolve: strengthening performance and staying competitive
Once the foundations are in place, attention often turns to making an established practice work even better.
That could mean improving profitability, attracting more of the right patients, strengthening your team, developing your marketing or simply finding more effective ways to run the business.
Evolving does not necessarily mean becoming bigger. It can be about making your existing practice more successful, efficient and sustainable.
This is a useful point to step back from the day-to-day and ask: “what would I like my practice to achieve over the next three to five years?”
Understanding where you are now can help identify where the greatest opportunities lie. SightCare members can draw on support with areas including KPIs and financial performance, marketing and PR, patient feedback and reviews, team and practice manager development, business coaching and peer networking.
Sometimes a fresh perspective, whether from an expert, a fellow independent or the numbers themselves, is enough to identify an opportunity that is difficult to see when you are immersed in the day-to-day running of the practice.
Expand: exploring what’s next
For some owners, the next stage is about taking the business in a new direction.
That might mean opening a second practice, developing a specialist clinic or introducing an additional service. It could mean building the leadership capability within your team so that you can step back from some of the operational detail. Or your definition of expansion might be personal, creating more time away from the practice while continuing to build a successful business.
Whatever expansion looks like, it can introduce a new set of questions.
- Is the existing practice strong enough to support another location?
- Where are the opportunities to diversify?
- Does your team have the skills and leadership capability to take on more responsibility?
- And how can you grow without simply adding more to your own workload?
SightCare can help members explore these questions through its community, business support, training, coaching and partner connections, and we also provide practical support for members considering additional practices or services.
Building a business that is less dependent on you can be an important part of this stage too. Investing in your people, systems and processes can create a stronger practice while giving you more choice over the role you want to play within it.
Exit: preparing for the future of the practice you’ve built
You do not have to be ready to retire to start thinking about what happens next.
In fact, considering your options earlier can give you more time to prepare the practice, your team and yourself (!) for whatever comes next.
Perhaps you would eventually like to reduce your working hours. You may want to develop someone within your team who could take on greater responsibility. You might be considering selling the practice one day or simply want to understand your options before you need to make any decisions.
For many independent owners, these conversations are about more than the financial value of the business.
Your practice may represent years of work: relationships with generations of patients, jobs created within your community, a team you have developed and a reputation you are proud of. Understandably, what happens to it after you step away can matter too.
SightCare’s exit support is designed to help members start thinking about these questions before decisions become urgent, with resources and support around succession and preparing for the future.
SightCare has also introduced STEP (Succession, Transition and Exit Planning), a confidential practice matching service for members. STEP can connect those considering selling their practice with fellow members looking for their next independent practice opportunity, creating the opportunity for conversations about succession to take place discreetly within the SightCare community.
Your journey can change
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that where you are today does not have to define where you will be tomorrow.
An owner focused on strengthening performance today might be considering a second practice in a few years. Someone who has spent years expanding may decide that their next priority is creating a better work-life balance. And an owner who has never seriously considered succession may decide it is time to start understanding their options.
You may even find yourself moving backwards and forwards between stages as your circumstances and ambitions change.
That is why SightCare’s support is not built around a single point in the life of a practice.
Training, coaching, networking and marketing support and our buying group (SPECS) and other financial services can all play different roles at different stages. The value lies in being able to draw on the right combination as your needs change.
Wherever you are on your practice journey, you can look ahead to what might come next and make sure you have the right support around you to get there.
