National Eye Health Week 2026: How your practice can get involved

Mark your calendars: National Eye Health Week (NEHW) runs from 21–27 September 2026. It’s the UK’s biggest annual awareness campaign for eye health, and it’s one of the best opportunities in the calendar for optical practices to boost footfall, re-engage lapsed patients, and strengthen your standing in the local community.

For Sightcare members, NEHW is a ready-made marketing and patient engagement moment — the groundwork is already done by the national campaign, so all your practice needs to do is plug in. Here’s what the week is about and practical ways to make the most of it.

What is National Eye Health Week?

Started in 2012 by the UK’s leading eye health and sight loss charities, NEHW exists to raise public awareness of the importance of regular eye tests — not just for vision, but for overall health. An estimated two million people in the UK live with sight loss, much of it preventable or treatable if caught early. Every year the campaign has a slightly different focus (screen time, diet and lifestyle, children’s vision), but the core aim is always the same: get more people through the practice door for a test.

Why it’s worth your practice’s time

NEHW does a lot of the awareness-raising for you — national media coverage, charity partnerships, and social media buzz all build public appetite for eye tests during the week. Practices that plan ahead and tie their own activity into the campaign typically see a genuine uplift in bookings, plus a chance to reconnect with patients who are overdue a check-up.

6 ways your practice can get involved

  1. Run a booking push. Email and text your patient database in the run-up to NEHW, prioritising anyone overdue for a test. A simple “It’s National Eye Health Week — is your check-up due?” message works well.
  2. Dress your window and in-store displays. NEHW provides free downloadable posters, social assets, and campaign branding — use these in your window display and at the reception desk to catch passing footfall.
  3. Get active on social media. Post daily through the week using #VisionMatters and #NEHW2026. Share eye health tips, behind-the-scenes practice content, or short explainer videos from your optometrists — this is a low-cost way to boost local visibility.
  4. Offer something extra. Consider a free add-on, a referral incentive, or a free lens cleaner offer for the week — anything that gives people an extra reason to book now rather than later.
  5. Reach out to local groups. Contact nearby schools, care homes, workplaces, or community centres to offer a short talk or screening event. This builds goodwill and can open up a steady stream of future patients.
  6. Brief and involve your whole team. Make sure reception and dispensing staff know the campaign is on, can talk confidently about it, and are proactively asking patients about overdue tests or family members who might benefit.

Make It Count

You don’t need to run every activity above — even a well-timed patient reminder and a smart window display can make a real difference to bookings during the week. NEHW is a gift of a marketing moment: the public’s attention is already primed, so it’s about making it as easy as possible for people to choose your practice. Learn more on the NEHW website.
